Honda Accord Windshield Wipers Not Working [Causes & Solutions]

Are your Honda Accord windshield wipers not working? The windshield wipers in our cars go through a lot during their lifespan, so on one not-so-fine morning, you might discover that the wipers in your Honda Accord are not working.

I have worked on several Honda Accord models. In this piece, I will talk about my personal experiences repairing Honda Accord windshield wipers. Faulty wiper motor, blown fuse, faulty wiper switch, and broken transmission-I have dealt with the Four Horsemen of wiper apocalypse during my Honda Accord wiper repairs.

Honda Accord Windshield Wipers Not Working [1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009]

Damaged Wiper Switch Problem of 2005 /2009 /2003 Honda Accord Windshield Wipers

The first time I got to work on a Honda Accord wiper was when a client brought in his car and told me that his 2005 Honda Accord windshield wipers had stopped working. So, I took a look. I later solved the problem similarly on a 2009 Honda Accord and a 2003 one.

When the wipers stop working, the wiper motor and the wiper switch are the most probable culprits. So before moving on to other potential factors, I wanted to do a quick check on the wiper switch.

If the wiper switch is busted, the turn signals will not work. So, I checked the turn signals and guess what? They were not turning on. It had to be the wiper switch!

I took out the wiper switch from the steering column and put in a new one. Then, I turned on the wipers, and they were working perfectly.

Wiper Motor Malfunction Problem of 2000 / 2005 Honda Accord Windshield Wipers

I worked on another 2005 Honda Accord model later but could not resolve the wiper problem by replacing the wiper switch. The turn signals turned out to be working just fine, so I had to investigate further.

I took a look under the hood and checked the wiper motor. I took it out and checked the negative and positive pins of the motor connector. I tested both ends with multimeter probes. The multimeter showed no voltage readings.

I could have made up my mind that the motor was done for, but I did not forget to check the fuse afterward. I discovered that the fuse had blown. So, instead of an expensive motor replacement, a new fuse was enough to take care of the problem. I also identified a blown fuse to cause the wipers to stop working in a 2000 Honda Accord.

Broken Wiper Transmission Problem of 2008 / 1996 Honda Accord Windshield Wipers

I found the wiper transmissions to be broken in two Honda Accord wiper malfunction cases. Usually, the transmission gets damaged on one side. So, either the driver-side wiper or the passenger-side wiper stops working. But in a 2008 and a 1996 Honda Accord, I found the wiper transmission broken on both sides.

I ruled out the wiper motor and wiper switch as potential causes after making sure both of them were working fine. Then, I tried to move the wipers across the windshield with my hand. Under normal circumstances, the wipers would not have moved easily. But I could easily make the wipers complete an arc by dragging them with my hand.

When you can freely move the wipers using your hands, either the wiper assembly has broken, or the transmission has been compromised. I looked at the cap at the base of the wiper arm. In both cases, the base turned out to be in fine condition. If the wiper arm connection had become loose, it would have stopped the wipers from working.

Then I checked the wiper transmissions, which connect the wiper arms to the wiper motor. Both of them got disconnected. I managed to restore wiper functionality by reconnecting the 2008 Honda Accord transmissions. But, I had to replace the transmissions in the 1996 Honda Accord.

2001 Honda Accord Windshield Wiper Stopped Working

Surprisingly, I found the wiper motor needs to be replaced in only one of my Honda Accord windshield repair cases. It was a 201 Honda Accord. Wiper motor failure is the most common cause of wiper problems in any vehicle. But for the Honda Accord, I only saw a compromised wiper motor once.

As usual, I checked the wiper switch first. It checked out okay. Then, I checked the motor with a voltmeter. After getting a zero reading, I was expecting to find a blown fuse. Unfortunately, I did not. The wiper relay was also fine. So, replacing the entire wiper motor was the only thing I could do.

FAQ

What To Do If Your Windshield Wipers Stop Working?

Check the turn signals first. If they turn on, your wiper switch is okay. After making sure the wiper switch is working fine, try to move the wipers with your hands. If they move without any resistance, you need to look at the wiper arm assembly and the transmissions. If the wipers are not moving freely, then check the motor. Repair the damaged part, and the windshield wipers will resume working.

What Would Cause Windshield Wipers To Stop Working?

Windshield wipers can stop working because the wiper switch or the wiper motor has become faulty. The wiper assembly might also become loose. Your wiper transmissions might have broken, or the wipers might have become excessively worn out.

Final Opinion

If your Honda Accord windshield wipers are not working, one of the issues I highlighted above could be responsible. Examine the wiper motor and switch first. Then, move on to other probable reasons.
